Traffic in and out of Miami Beach can be a tremendous headache, especially during the holidays or whenever events like the annual Art Basel are being held on the barrier island. The MacArthur Causeway which provides one of the means of getting on and off the island can quickly become congested, especially with the current closure of the Venetian Causeway. Thankfully, there are plans in the works to address this situation, starting with the launch of a wireless streetcar system.
Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine and the Miami Beach Commission recently gave the okay to proceed with plans for a wireless streetcar system. Designed to be completed in phases, the first phase will connect Miami Beach’s 5th Street and Washington Avenue. This first step will be dubbed the ‘South Beach Component’ and will be followed by Alton Road and 17th Street as a means of complementing the cross-bay route that leads to Miami’s downtown area. If all goes well, future phases will focus on other major roadways like a Julia Tuttle Causeway connection to Midtown Miami and an eventual connection to Miami International Airport.
